Interview with Lee Ann

Hello! My name is Jeannie and I am Lee Ann’s third service dog from Canine Companions for Independence. Lee Ann and I met in 2002 when I finished my training just after my second birthday and we have been together ever since.

From the first day we met, it felt like we had always been together, so understanding what Lee Ann needed and learning new commands felt natural - almost familiar. We were such a good fit that I learned 20 new commands in the first two months, adding to my 45-command repertoire. I had to get up to speed in a hurry because she needed me! I even won an award in 2005 from the California Veterinary Medical Association for being outstanding working dog of the year. That’s me with my plaque. I’m not even sure what a plaque is, but judging from all the attention, I guess it’s a good thing!

I am very serious when I work, and really goofy when I play. Hide-and-seek is one of my favorite games! I enjoy splashing in creeks, having people pet me, and playing with my friends Hoshi, Marsden, and Sarina. I love everyone, so when people come over, I open the front door for Lee Ann and then race for the closest toy to hold in my mouth while I turn in circles with my tail like a propeller and sing with glee. I’m loud, but hey – who wants to hold back happiness!

After I won the award, the San Jose Mercury News ran an article about me. A nice man named Stuart Roe, who read the article, asked to do a 15-minute documentary about my work with Lee Ann for a local cable network. ¡Et voilá! We thought he did a great job! You can view the documentary on this page, as well as my Easter egg hunt video and my gallery of photos. Enjoy…
